What are some of y’all’s coping methods?

I am keeping myself busy, but I am also somebody that tends to have to be doing two things at once. For example, I just left my hotel room where I was with my whole family to go get my sunglasses so that we can all go to the pool. While I was walking, I instinctively grabbed my phone to get onto Instagram to see if I could stumble on to something that I wasn’t supposed to be on. I didn’t do it. I left my phone in my pocket, but I started rubbing my fingers together so that my hand was doing something. It kind of made my fingers raw, so I’m wondering if any of you have any suggestions for fidgets or other absent-minded coping skills for when “keeping busy” doesn’t work.

Managing urges is the most critical skill. Here’s my process: 1. acknowledge the urge. 2. Take a deep breath and then call it what it is “I’m feeling an urge to ______.” Sometimes I do that out loud. 3. Pay attention to where I feel it and what it feels like (is it my head, my chest, is it a tightness, something else). 4. Once I’ve acknowledged it, breathed in and described it, I let it go. It’s easier than trying to fight it, at least for me. Then pay attention to those little habits that may take you off course and focus on who you want to be and what you want to create. It’s doable. You’re already doing it. Just keep at it, keep learning what works for you and you’ll be where you want to be with it.

physical activity helps a lot. leave your phone at home if you can and go on a 20-30 minute walk. it puts your mind on things in front of you in the real world instead of pixels on a screen
