One thing that’s helped me is realizing that I do have a choice. Not when I’m in the moment, but hours even days before. This addiction is the worst type of addiction in my opinion. It destroys your masculinity/femininity quicker than anything else will. The best way I’ve found to quit is telling yourself you’re not going to do it before you get into that situation. But it’s not just that. The thing that helped me the most is avoiding those situations in the first place. Need the bathroom? Phone goes in the room. Time to shower? Turn the temp down. (Cold water works best). Taking a bath? Maybe don’t. Bored and want to start scrolling? Try something else (drawing works best for me). Putting yourself in those situations is called negotiating with your addiction. It’s consciously giving yourself opportunities to relapse. This is something I’ve struggled with for years now and it took me this long to figure out. Instead of trying to white knuckles quitting why not make it easier on myself. Instead of planning on “resisting when I’m tempted” why not avoid those situations”tempting situations” altogether?
