I was raised in a catholic household, and was in a catholic school through elementary school. However, as I matured, my beliefs have changed, and I would now consider myself science-based/Atheist. A lot of the posts on here praise God and quote Him, but I personally have no connection to any of it. Do you guys have any recommendations as far as alternatives for religion and when to implement it?

I was in the same shoes as you; I consider my upbringing as being “culturally Catholic”. It took my 23 years to actually find Jesus and that’s when I was at rock bottom with this addiction. Although titles/labels aren’t important, I now consider myself a Christian, focusing on my relationship with Him. That said, I’m not here to impose my Christian beliefs, but I’ll answer your question because there was a time where I tried to remedy this addiction without God. Someone here mentioned that your knowledge of porn is “incomplete” without God. To that, I would say Andrew Huberman’s discussion of what porn does to the brain and the conversation of the effects of dopamine can help grasp “the meaning of porn” through science. If by “alternatives” you’re referring to ways to overcome this addiction without God, you can look into the concept of the “Habit Loop” which is the primary topic of the book “Power of Habit” by Charles Schwigg(?). In a nutshell it talks about analyzing the “reward” you get from the “behavior” (this case porn/masturbation) and replace the behavior with an activity that can bring a similar, if not same reward. It also talks about eliminating your “cues” that trigger the unwanted behavior. A huge cue for me was social media, so after thorough reflection, I realized I don’t need it, so I deleted social media. I recommend everyone on this journey to delete social media.

Get to know Jesus Christ. Don’t let anyone’s else’s actions take you away from our Father. Don’t loook at religion but at the truth. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. What do you think that happens to you when you die?

As an atheist, you have an incomplete understanding of what porn is. You don’t see it as a sin that destroys your relationship with God and attacks your spirit. So, your reason for quitting is going to be weak, since you don’t see it as evil. Second, the only way I’ve found to break the chains of addiction is through the power of Jesus. Mark my words: if you’re ever free from this, it’s because Jesus Christ was helping you. The alternative to religion is relationship. Porn will bring you to the end of yourself and that’s where you will meet Him. He created you. He created science. He gave up his life to set you free from pornography. He’s ready and waiting…

You just haven’t met God. Ofc you don’t know why we serve Him. I’m sure you grew up with a thin, religious, ritualistic, view of the Lord above seated in the heavens. But I bet you never even thought to try to find Him for yourself. He’s alive and real, and you can’t run forever.

My primary motivations are religious, but I do implement practical things to get over it. I have an Apple Watch, so I put it on and lock my phone in a drawer so I can still get important notifications and not scroll. I try to keep my thoughts clean and not fall down any fantasy rabbit holes. I leave the house when the urge gets strong cause sometimes the only way to not do it is put myself in a place where I would get arrested for public indecency. I hope this makes sense, but this is what I do.
