For the people that are further into recovery, how long did it take you to finally feel the urges to become less frequent and less intense?

Depends. Search up something called positive mind management. That made a huge difference for me. Also, there’s a podcast called Overcoming Pornography for Good that has lots of tips for how to process urges instead of fighting them. The key for me is getting my subconscious engaged, which means practicing. Rehearsing in my mind what I’ll do when I feel that urge. Then choosing - during practice - how I’ll respond. After a setback I’d replay it in my head but make a different choice in my mind, 20-30 times, until it felt real. Then when an urge hit me, I didn’t feel out of control, it was just like I’d rehearsed. Make that practice feel as real as you can, your brain can’t always tell the difference. It gets easier. After using a couple of these tools I’d gone a week before I noticed I hadn’t had a real urge. Now I’m knocking on 90 days and it hasn’t felt hard. If I can do it, you can do it.
