I think to a certain extent it’s about opening yourself up to the potential for sin. I don’t know that the act on its own is a sin, but you put yourself in a position where sin is much more likely, and one where you’re more vulnerable to temptation. The Bible talks about cutting off the hand that causes you to sin. I don’t mean to say you need to physically cut off your hand, but rather cut something out of your life (or our lives, as this is something a lot of us struggle with) that can cause you to sin. Also, James 4:17 says: “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” I believe this can be applied because if you are convicted that masturbation is wrong, it is wrong for you. Maybe someone else doesn’t have that same conviction, and since (correct if I’m wrong) masturbation isn’t really mentioned biblically, we need to lean on the spirit and inferences from Gods word to guide us. I hope this helps a little bit. ‭‭

It’s a matter of despairity. Take a moment and ask yourself, what did you gain? If at all this action drew you away from God, stop it right away as soon as you can. I’ve seen commentaries where Christian pastors and scholars say it’s not a sin if you don’t watch p*rn and your head is clear of sexually immoral things, which I agree with somewhat. But that’s never been the case for me. Even when I have tried to convince myself to do it in a ‘holy’ way I find my mind wandering to the images of other women in my head. Hope this helps!

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. "And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also." (Genesis 38:9-10, KJV)
