What We Thought Was Dead…
I heard a story yesterday that made me think of the things of the Lord, so I thought I’d share briefly. Back in the day, I’m not too sure when, it was harder to medically determine when people were truly dead. Nowadays we have lots of ways to know for sure, but 100 years ago, not so much. So, what we came up with in our infinite wisdom is to tie a string to dead people’s fingers before burying them. The other end of the string was attached to a bell so that if someone wakes up buried alive, they can ring the bell. Graveyard workers would patrol graveyards listening for the sound of the bells. That’s where the term graveyard shift came from. Well, this story got me to thinking about how quick we sometimes are to call something dead, when we serve a God that redeems, heals, saves, delivers, sets free, and transforms the deadest and driest of situations. I think it’s easy when you’re in the battle with porn to get wrapped up in all the worst things about it and not see a way out, but maybe we need to start learning to listen for the sound of bells because our God makes dead things come alive.
This is a good reminder, and makes me think of Ezekiel 37 "Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life."' He gives life to His children, rescuing us from death and sin.🤍
