A Good Rule of Thumb
Going through these urges is tough, but a tactic I’m trying to teach myself is to go through the motions in my head of what will happen when I give in to the urge. Basically it goes like this: 1. Dopamine hits and the urge comes. 2. You give in and feel good. 3. Once you finish you feel bad. 4. Not only that, but you are hindering your growth. This has been helping me lately and I hope you all can incorporate it into your lives. Just play the scenario in your head instead of actually going through the motions. This way you will experience the negative effects mentally without actually watching porn. What it will do is start to associate porn with pain that you can avoid. Also, I want to mention that I myself, as well as a lot of other people (depending on how far in addiction you are) tend to use porn as a way to cope with negative emotions. The honest truth is that as humans we are meant to struggle. Often times we use porn as an escape because we don’t want to face the negative emotions in life. But using an escape to cope with these feelings only hinders our growth. Think of it like a tree that just sprouted. It has to struggle and compete with other trees for sunlight, but the tree keeps trying and it gets bigger over time. Let’s make an agreement today to all stop hindering our growth. Stop watching porn. It’s not helping you with anything. Let’s be real men and sit with our emotions and process them like God made us to. In the end, we will come out much stronger, and nothing will be able to hold us back.
Here’s a BETTER rule of thumb: B - Breathe Deeply (Getting more oxygen to the brakes of the brain) R - Remember the Truth (Romans 12:2—Renewing the mind) A –Ask God for Help (1Cor. 10:13--Claiming God’s promise for help in temptation) C- Call (2 Timothy 2:22—Fleeing lust “with others“) E - Escape the Situation (1 Corinthians 6:18—Flee immorality)
